At the time of this article, the Asus Chromebox M004U is the world’s smallest Chrome device. The entire dimensions of the box come in at an alarmingly small 4.88 × 4.88 × 1.65 inch. We at Promevo were eager to see if the old adage applied: can good things come in small packages? At such an affordable price and small form factor, what kind of performance were we going to find? We ran the Asus Chromebox M004U through our gamut of tests to find out how much kick this little box had.

The Asus Chromebox M004U’s most notable physical feature is, of course, its size. It’s small enough to fit in one’s hand and about as portable as can be with a full-fledged device that isn’t a laptop. Also, it’s extremely light, weighing in at a slim 1.32 lbs. There are a total of 4 USB 3.0 ports. The power supply is 65 watts, meaning the power draw from this device is going to be extremely minimal even at maximum load. Asus Chromebox M004U also has both wireless capability and an ethernet port, in case you like to be hardwired in. The device has a single fan that vents out of the rear of the device. The fan is quiet and not audible under normal usage conditions. Of particular note on the inside is that the RAM is upgradable to 4GB with a standard SO-DIMM 204-pin memory stick.
Do you want to use multiple monitors? It’s not a problem. The Asus Chromebox M004U has both an HDMI and DisplayPort input. This is great for those that don’t wish to sacrifice the increased productivity and convenience that multiple displays bring. The resolution also goes up to 1920×1080 on both monitors with no noticeable latency while browsing.
With a device this compact, you might wonder how well the cooling is handled. In our temperature tests, the Asus Chromebox M004U had impressive results. At the beginning of the test we took a unit heat reading while the device was idle and the Asus Chromebox M004U measured a temperature of 84˚ F. After 1 hour of the WebGL’s Aquarium test constantly running, the temperature was at a relatively cool 94˚ F near the rear vent, where the fan exhaust goes. The top of the device was 104˚ F, and the front and sides measured about 90˚. On the bottom of the device there is fanless vent that ran at 96˚. These temperatures are an acceptable range and are even on the cool side.
Boot Up Speed. Chrome OS devices are known for their fast boot up times, and the Asus Chromebox M004U continues the tradition. We timed 5 boot ups on the device and finished with an average boot time of 6.79 seconds.

Google+ Browsing. We also took a look at Chrome’s built-in FPS counter to measure frame rate and smoothness when scrolling through a site with dynamically generated content. For our test, we used a Google+ page. The counter was stable as content was loading with very little faltering when scrolling down the page, staying between 30-60 fps.
HD Video Test. To test HD video playback, we used the Nvidia PureVideo HD Test video on YouTube using the “Stats for Nerds” feature, which can be accessed by clicking on the video’s context menu. We played the video on 1080p and video playback was very smooth with 0 dropped frames for the entire length of the video. This is quite an impressive feat for a such a modestly priced device.
Based on Promevo’s tests, the Asus Chromebox M004U is hard to beat at its price, especially with its combination of portability, speed, functionality, as well as plenty of peripheral and display options. This Chromebox is ideal for schools and businesses that want to have a more permanent work station. It can also be used effectively as a multimedia device and, of course, a great web browsing experience with the Chrome browser.
