The 11.6” Samsung Chromebook 2 (Model #:XE500C12-K01US) recently arrived at Promevo! We were thrilled to get the chance to test this new Samsung Chromebook 2 because this device is the successor for the popular Samsung Series 3 Chromebook.
We were also excited to test out the Samsung Chromebook 2’s all new Intel Celeron Processor N2840. The performance and energy efficiency has been significantly improved compared to previous Intel Atom CPUs. So, needless to say, we were eager to take a look at this new Chromebook 2 and run it through our battery of tests to see how it would perform.

Case. The Samsung Chromebook 2 is sleek with the leather-like textured cover that we have grown accustomed to seeing from Samsung. The construction feels sturdy despite the fact the Samsung Chromebook 2 weighs in at only 2.65 pounds and measures 0.66” thin. Samsung has beefed up the Samsung Chromebook 2 with a metal frame, which reinforces the chassis and lid, giving this device a sturdy quality that is unlike most Chromebooks at this price point. A noticeable improvement from the Samsung Series 3, this Chromebook’s predecessor, is the placement of the ports. No longer will you have to turn the device around to access the USB ports on the back of the Chromebook as they are now conveniently placed on the side of the Samsung Chromebook 2XE500C12-K01US.
Keyboard. The Samsung Chromebook 2 has a 74 key keyboard, with black keys and white letters. The keys have a low profile, are slightly concave, and are nearly silent while typing with a fast response time. Like all Chromebooks, there is no number pad. The keyboard is not LED backlit and measures 10.875” across with the letter and number keys measuring 0.625” × 0.625”. Overall, the keyboard is spacious and very comfortable to use, especially for an 11.6” Chromebook.
Touchpad. The touchpad on the Samsung Chromebook 2 is one of the larger touchpads out there, measuring 3.94” × 2.25”. It has Multi-Touch capability with no visible buttons. The touchpad also has a tactile feel with a click that you can both hear and feel when pressing down on it.
Display. The Samsung Chromebook 2 has an 11.6” LED HD (1366 × 768), non-glossy display, with anti-reflective technology and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The display did well under glare conditions, and we found it to be visible even in sunlight. The bezel around the screen is smaller than average, with the top and bottom measuring 0.75” and 1” respectively, and the sides measuring 0.625”.
Speakers. The speakers on the Samsung Chromebook 22XE500C12-K01US are located on the bottom of the device towards the front. We turned up the speakers to the maximum to see what they could do, and were surprised at the sound quality coming out of such small form factor. Not only were the speakers loud, but the quality of the sound was better than expected. Even at a high volume, there was little to no distortion present.
Temperature. At the beginning of the test, we took a unit heat reading while the device was idle. The Samsung Chromebook 2 measured a temperature of 78˚ F. After 1 hour of the WebGL’s Aquarium test, the temperature rose to 95˚ F in the middle of the keyboard, 98˚ F in the middle of the underside, and 84˚ F in the HDMI port, because there are no vents. At the end of the test, more than 3 hours after we started, the unit’s heat reading measured 96˚ F in the middle of the keyboard, 101˚ F in the middle of the underside, and 85˚ F in the HDMI port because there were no vents. While this temperature seems high, this is the temperature right by the processor and is not near where the user comes in contact with the device.
Battery Life. Battery life is an important aspect to consider when comparing Chromebooks. The test we used for battery life was the previously mentioned WebGL’s Aquarium test. We started the evaluation with a fully charged battery, WiFi on, and using 10 fish in the test. It took 3 hours and 46 minutes to fully drain the battery.
The Samsung Chromebook 22XE500C12-K01US uses the fast and highly efficient new Intel® Celeron® Processor N2840 2.16GHZ with 2.58GHZ Turbo Boost, and 2GB of DDR3L (1600MHZ) RAM. This processor is a dual core processor with two threads that are based on the new Silvermont architecture, which is a new out-of-order design. The increased use of the pipeline and many other improvements have increased the performance per clock by about 50%. Out of the box, this device includes a 802.11 ac dual band wireless card. The Chromebook 2 also has an HDMI port, a USB 2.0 port, a USB 3.0, and a Micro SD card slot. Below we ran some tests to see how well the Samsung Chromebook 2 would perform.
Boot Up Speed. Chrome OS devices are known for their fast boot up times, and the Samsung Chromebook 2 does not disappoint. We timed 5 boot ups on the Chromebook 2 and finished with an average boot time of 9.42 seconds.
- 9.32 sec.
- 9.36 sec.

- 9.44 sec.
- 9.68 sec.
Google+ Browsing. We also took a look at Chrome’s built-in FPS counter to measure frame rate and smoothness when scrolling through a site with dynamically generated content. For our test, we used a Google+ page. The counter was stable as content was loading with very little faltering when scrolling down the page.
HD Video Test. To test HD video playback, we used the Nvidia PureVideo HD Test video on YouTube using the “Stats for Nerds” feature, which can be accessed by clicking on the video’s context menu. We played the video on 720p (the highest resolution that can be displayed at 1366 × 768), and video playback was smooth with 0 dropped frames for the entire length of the video.
We evaluated the Samsung Chromebook 2 (Model #:XE500C12-K01US)’s design, performance, and battery life and discovered the Chromebook 2 to be a sleek 11.6” Chromebook. Additionally, we found the Samsung Chromebook 2 has an average boot up speed of 9.42 seconds, an octane score of about 7,704 plugged in, and exceptional HD video performance. Its fast and highly efficient Intel® Celeron® Processor N2840 sets the Samsung Chromebook 2 apart. The Samsung Chromebook 2’s remarkable performance and low price point are sure to make it a strong option in the Chromebook marketplace.
